Tasting Notes

winemaker's note

This is one of the best wines that Deep Woods Estate makes. It's the one that I cellar for special occasions and also drink on a Tuesday with pizza.

Julian Langworthy, Chief Winemaker

colour

Deep crimson with purple hues.

aroma

Brimming with aromas of violets, blackberry bramble and bay leaf.

palate

Full and rich with notes of dark chocolate, bramble and cassis. Soft, ripe tannin abounds the palate and provides both structure and length.

cellaring

This wine may be enjoyed on release but will find further complexity over three to four years from vintage.

Technical

vintage

The 2019 growing season was not without challenge. A mild and very steady vintage allowed for slow, measured flavour and tannin development. The result is medium-bodied wines with lovely perfume and wonderful fine-boned tannin structures. Elegance personified if
you will.

winemaking

Fruit was crushed into separate fermenters and pump-overs and delestage were used to extract tannin and colour. After 12–16 days,  the ferments were pressed before completing primary fermentation to dryness in tank. The wine was then racked into tight grain, thin stave Bordelaise French oak barriques, 25% of which were new and matured for 18 months before blending.

Reviews

The Real Review Cellar Talk 2022

Chief winemaker Julian Langworthy joined Deep Woods Estate over a decade ago and in that time the quality and value of wines has soared to the highest level.

This wine is archetypal Margaret River, there’s fabulous aromatics and really sophisticated and layered flavours. Lovely dark, deep colour. Lifted aromas of blackberry, dark cherry, mulberry, bramble, dried herbs and tobacco. A youthful, deep and powerful palate, lashings of blackberry, blood plum, graphite and cedary oak. The tannins are firm, dry and provide lovely shape to the wine and the acidity is bright and crunchy. Drinks well now but will age well. Smart value.

Halliday wine companion 2022

As per usual for the Deep Woods team, this is a dence, intensely vibrant and cracking cabernet merlot. Never doubt them, for they are doing brilliant things. Screw cap.
