Best Value $20-$25 Red in Ray Jordan's Top 100 Reds 2023

Best Value $20-$25 Red in Ray Jordan's Top 100 Reds 2023

We are thrilled to have received some fantastic scores in the Ray Jordan Top 100 Reds 2023, featuring six wines from the Fogarty Wine Group portfolio.

The Top 100 is an annual list of Ray's best value red wines (under $40) from around Australia, and with more than 700 wines being tasted this year, this was the largest number of wines tasted for the Top 100 to date.

We are very proud that the Evans & Tate 2019 Redbrook Estate Shiraz was awarded 96 points, the equal highest score given in the Top 100 list this year. Alongside this high score, Ray said:

"A mighty good partner to the Cabernet from the same vintage. This is thick and densely concentrated with lashings of dark plum, fruitcake and rich dark chocolate. Add to that some mulberry and savoury oak influences and you have an outstanding example of Shiraz from the heart of Margaret River."

This wine was also one of four in consideration for the number one spot. On crowning the top red wine for 2023, Ray called it a "battle royale" and described his difficult decision when he said: "... oh my it was so close and any one of these wines could have easily slotted into the number one slot."

The Deep Woods Estate 2022 Shiraz et al was also named Ray's 2023 'Best Value Red $20 - $25'. Awarded 94 points, Ray highly reviewed this wine:

"This exceptional blend of Shiraz, Malbec and Tempranillo has been a winner for Deep Woods from the outset, consistently delivering a wine that punches so far above its weight. I’ve aways thought the perfumed lift and sweet fruit of the palate from the Tempranillo is the key to it. Another cracker demanding to be drunk. Combines power and elegance."

Evans & Tate 2019 Redbrook Estate Shiraz

96 Points

A mighty good partner to the Cabernet from the same vintage. This is thick and densely concentrated with lashings of dark plum, fruitcake and rich dark chocolate. Add to that some mulberry and savoury oak influences and you have an outstanding example of Shiraz from the heart of Margaret River.

Evans & Tate 2019 Single Vineyard Cabernets

95 Points

Pretty, perfumed and powerful. That’s this blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a dollop of Malbec. It’s such a beautifully presented, medium weight wine offering fragrance on the nose and delicacy yet power on the palate. Style and elegance personified.

Millbrook 2020 Single Vineyard Shiraz

95 Points

I first saw this cracking wine last year and, if anything, it’s a little better off from an already high base. This is one of an increasing number of stunning Shiraz emerging from Frankland River and redefining this region for a distinctive style of Shiraz. It’s a wild and crazy ride through black fruits, liquorice, dark plum and chocolate with a slightly ferrous ironstone core adding to its complexity. An exciting wine with a great future.

Millbrook Estate 2020 Shiraz Viognier

94 Points

Millbrook have championed Viognier as a stand-alone varietal and also with Shiraz. One of the few who actually put it on the label, but given the strength and reputation of this wine, it makes sense. Loaded with all the ripe Shiraz influences of opulent plum, dark berry and mulberry flavours. The Viognier adds a little to the tannins while lifting the nose with a bright gingery musky character.

Deep Woods Estate 2022 Shiraz et al

94 Points

This exceptional blend of Shiraz, Malbec and Tempranillo has been a winner for Deep Woods from the outset, consistently delivering a wine that punches so far above its weight. I’ve aways thought the perfumed lift and sweet fruit of the palate from the Tempranillo is the key to it. Another cracker demanding to be drunk. Combines power and elegance.

Deep Woods Estate 2020 Ebony

92 Points

This has been a consistent performer over many years in this tasting. Has delightful poise and fruit expression with soft supple tannins and a tiny lick of oak balancing the beautiful medium bodied red fruits. Always delivers.
