Why you'll love this wine

While this variety is not as well-known as the region's Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River Shiraz is something to behold and the Redbrook Estate Shiraz is one of the best in the region, if not the country. The last vintage, the 2019, was the winner of the highly coveted Max Schubert Trophy for Most Outstanding Red Wine at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show 2023, and the current 2022 release was awarded a Gold Medal at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards 2024. This is an exceptional wine showcasing the immense quality of Shiraz from Margaret River.

Evocative aromas of mulberry, licorice and black olive tapenade entice the senses. Deep cassis, peat, pepper and dark plum burst onto the palate with an intense depth of flavour enveloped by fine-grained, powdery tannins.

Tasting Notes

Inky purple-black with dense red rim. Youthful & vibrant.

aroma & palate

Vibrant floral notes coupled with mulberry and blood plum fruits are married with complex and textural savoury elements of fresh earth, peat and white pepper. The medium-bodied palate has extraordinary drive and length of flavour with vibrancy and purity of fruit being at the forefront of the style.

Peak drinking to 2027 on.

Technical

vintage

Our 2022 vintage was set up with excellent winter rainfall received over June, July and August in 2021 – very close to the long-term average of 556mm. This ensured the soil profile reached capacity and recharged dams in the vineyard. A mild spring followed with October having significantly higher rainfall than average and spring being cool and cloudy in general. Budburst was surprisingly even but late as a result with November flowering also happening under cool (but drier) conditions with some variability in fruit set and subsequent early berry development as a result (~3 weeks later than typical).

December and January then provided extraordinarily dry and sunny conditions (a very warm period over Xmas) with no rainfall which saw vine maturity “catch up” to a harvest start of only around a week later than average. A strong Marri blossom helped preserve the quality of the vintage by distracting birds that would have otherwise been feasting on the ripening grapes.

A cooler change in the night temperatures and a light rain event in late February after our Chardonnay had been picked was perfectly timed to refresh the vines and allow for an extended ripening period (“hang time”) and a flexible picking window for the red varieties to ensure full flavours developed and tannins were fine and ripe.

All varietals achieved excellent quality and ripeness across the region with crop levels lower than 2021 to a more average volume which has further boosted the flavour and balance in the wines of 2022.

winemaking

Made from our vineyards in the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River with the majority from our mature Redbrook vineyard planted in 1975.

Hand-picked and cold soaked with a touch over 50% whole bunches included in the base of the ferment. Wild fermentation for the first ~20% of fermentation before being overseeded with yeast – for aromatic, flavour and textural complexity. The wine was then aged in seasoned large-format (500L) French oak puncheons for 9 months which preserves the perfumed, savoury and peppery aromatics that defines our unique style of Redbrook Shiraz.

Reviews

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, July 2024

There’s ample bold fruit flavour here but the tannin is well-finessed through the finish, and it’s the latter reason that really elevates it. Sweet raspberry, toast, plum, marshmallow and black cherry flavours are served ripe and generous, before a gorgeous curl of tannin manages the exit. Yes this is at the bolder end of the Margaret River Shiraz spectrum but there’s some high grade scaffolding here, and it works.

94 Points 94

Halliday Wine Companion 2025

Somewhat brawny with lots of sweet yet charry oak hanging around. Richly fruited, laden with spices and densely packed tannins and puckering acidity, all that means is this will improve with a few years under its belt and change the outcome.

90 Points 90

International Wine & Spirits Challenge 2024

Joyful aromas of textbook redcurrant, black olive, and Middle Eastern spice tease the palate. Concentrated dark fruit flavours are carried by sinewy tannins, leading to a layered and lingering finish.
