Tasting Notes

Colour

Medium to full red purple.

Aroma

A rich and powerful bouquet with layers of complexity. The aroma is laced with blue
and black berry fruits, charred cedar, ripe fig and fine subtle spices.

Palate

Full bodied, and richly flavoured, cool climate elegance at its finest. The palate is
defined by generous ripe fruit, perfectly balanced with seasoned sweet oak. Cassis,
vanilla, dark plum, vanilla and toast, enhanced with natural acidity to maintain
structure. Fine silky tannins complement the finish.

Cellaring

Will drink beautifully for a decade or more.

Technical

vintage & winemaking

2011 is regarded as one of the best vintages in Pemberton history. The season commenced with a cool wet spring, allowing vines to develop strong and healthy canopies, and followed up with a dry and warm ripening period. Rainfall during this period was minimal and the dry autumn ensured our red grapes reached full maturity without any disease pressure.

Yilgarn represents the essence of Smithbrook; produced from our estate vineyard in Pemberton. Small parcels of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are carefully selected and matured in new oak barrels. This ultra-premium blend demonstrates refined elegance alongside restrained power.

Reviews

Halliday Wine Companion 2014

An elegant, but remarkably intense, blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon reflecting (in part) finishing its fermentation in new and used French oak; the tannins thus obtained have a special mouthfeel to the lively display of cassis fruit.
