Why you'll love this wine
On describing this alternative variety, Smithbrook Winemaker Ben Rector said: "Who doesn’t love Nebbiolo? I can't think of many wines that exhibit full bodied characteristics and structure, while maintaining such an elegant fruit profile with subtle aromatics. The variety has a tendency to produce a wide range of terroir driven styles, almost all featuring the unique rose petal, dark cherry aromatics, with a lighter coloured hue, but astonishingly complex and robust tannin structure that really sets it apart from other varieties popular in Australia just now."
Tasting Notes
Colour
Pale garnet, red ruby hues.
Aroma
Complex, lifted aroma displaying mulberry and blueberry, with rose, violet and five spice notes.
Palate
The palate is juicy and vibrant, with generous fruit and a long silky texture. Firm tannins, characteristic of this variety, are balanced against the fruit weight. This wine will be a fantastic accompaniment to many styles of cuisine.
Cellaring
With 18 months in oak, this wine is certainly approachable in its youth with cellaring potential of up to eight years in the right conditions
Technical
vintage and winemaking
Abundant winter rainfall leading into the 2018 vintage filled the dams and promoted vine canopy growth. A cool spring resulted in slower maturity but promoted fruit flavours in both whites and reds. Occasional rainfall during the harvest period provided some challenges. However, a dedicated viticultural team helped procure clean fruit despite disease pressure. Reds benefited greatly from a warm and dry autumn and have resulted in some of our ripest reds for some years.

Reviews
Halliday Wine Companion 2021
Hand-picked, crushed and destemmed into a small open fermenter, 4 weeks on skins. Special care to manage tannin extraction and promote fruit retention was an unqualified success. It's not full-bodied, but the flavours and wild forest fruits and red cherries come through well. And the price!.

Stuart Knox, The Real Review 2022
Medium ruby with a brick-red rim. Raspberry and bitumen aromatics. Medium-bodied with a dark cherry fruit and black slate characters. Tannins are firm as expected for the variety but remain in context right to the finish. Good value here.
