Technical
Vintage
The vines on the estate were planted in 1996 on a shallow, lateritic gravel ridge, with a southwest aspect. The 2017 vintage began with some late rain occurring in early February. As fruit on the estate was still unripe it was not negatively affected. The remainder of the growing season was warm and dry, which allowed the fruit to ripen at full potential without any issues.
Winemaking
Components of this wine were hand-picked from the estate vineyard. 100% of the fruit was destemmed separately to open-top fermenters and then inoculated with FX10 and left for a ten-day ferment with a maximum temperature of 26 degrees. Pressed early to avoid excessive extraction of harsh phenolics. Malo was completed in tank, racked to 40% new and 60% seasoned Bordeaux barriques, before being matured for 20 months. All separate components were individually barrel selected to determine the final blend before being bottled in December 2018.
