Medium to full red purple.
The aroma abounds with lifted savoury and bramble fruits. Dark plum and cherry with hints of vanilla and spice make this wine warm and inviting.
A fruit-driven wine that is medium-bodied, yet has a firm structure to ensure it will improve with bottle age. Bright cherry fruit, with an undertone of subtle oak and fine silky tannins complement the finish.
Will continue to improve for 2–4 years and drink well for over 7 years.Download Tasting Notes
In the 1980s Smithbrook was identified as a premium winegrowing site that would be most suited to planting the Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet and Merlot. The property shares similar climate, soil type and maritime influence to the most famous wine region in France.
The growing season leading up to 2012 was warmer and drier than average for our estate vineyards. These conditions were ideal as disease pressure was kept to a minimum. A rain spell in the beginning and at the end of January, unusual for this time of year, gave the vines a perfect boost and ensured strong vine health and perfect ripening.
This wine has been blended from a selection of ten different blocks which have each been fermented separately and matured in a combination of new and seasoned oak barriques for 18 months. Carefully fined with egg whites before being bottled, the resulting wine style aims to demonstrate the terroir of the vineyard – rich in elegance and structure.
