vintage

The 2017 growing season was distinctively mild, meaning canopy management was very important to maintain fruit quality while the cooler weather meant a long ripening period which allowed for excellent flavour development.

winemaking

We have specifically selected this 30-year-old vineyard located in the Frankland River region of the Great Southern to source fruit for this first release Single Vineyard wine because of its high quality, cool climate fruit it produces. This region specialises in Shiraz that has a peppery, spice and red fruited backbone that can only be found in Frankland River.

Perfectly ripe fruit was hand harvested and delivered to the winery during the cool night. The fruit was destemmed and transferred to open top fermenters for fermentation, hand plunged twice daily for gentle extraction of tannins. Temperatures were kept below 25 degrees Celsius to retain the beautiful aromatics of the Great Southern region. The wine was then pressed to new and seasoned French oak puncheons, matured for 12 months before being lightly filtered and bottled.

A fine Shiraz exuding varietal content and regional DNA: cracked pepper to iodine-doused acidity framing blueberry, lilac aromatics and charcuterie all-sorts. It's very good. It is warmer than Northern Rhone top-drawer, but a truly energetic wine crackling along a taut timbre of acidity and tannin.

This is a super wine that has already scored big in wine shows. Ripe plummy fruit evident on the palate with infusions of spices and licorice, with a lick or two of chocolate. Dense yet has a lifted lightness of touch that elevates the palate and mouth feel. lovely wine.
