vintage

Ebony is a classic Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz produced from both select growers and Deep Woods Estate-grown fruit. 2017 was a vintage of two distinct halves. A mild spring that initially caused some worry for varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz was offset by a beautifully warm, early Autumn. Despite harvest being some three weeks later than a typical Margaret River season, fruit quality was incredible and the resultant wines are elegant, full of flavour and have lower than average alcohol levels.

winemaking

The two varieties were handled separately throughout the winery with a range of winemaking techniques such as open-top fermentation, pre-soaking and post-fermentation maceration used. The philosophy behind Ebony is simple; fruit richness, flavour and soft approachable tannin.

Another of the best budget buys that hits the mark yar in and year out. Spicy plummy chocolate and blackcurrant fruit in abundance. A light touch of spicy oak completes a well-presented package.

Delicious tobacco and dark-berry aromas and flavours here with wet earth. Medium body. Light tannins. Fresh and simple finish.

What you want in a blend of this nature from the get-go, abundance of black and red fruit tickles the nasal cavity. Touch of spice and cedar. The palate is rounded, inviting, layers of velvety chocolate sweep sensitively across the palate. Soft tannins and well-pitched acidity suggest this is a go-to proposition for now. You can see how it would charm a legion of hardened show judges with come hither ways. Perhaps critically you'd suggest it a crowd-pleaser, darn good drinking for all of its $15.
